Recent tragedies have Monroe City Schools beefing up security

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Interim Monroe Superintendent Derenda Flowers along with school board members are aiming to beef up safety measures.

"It's sad to say, but with Sandy Hook and so many other schools, safety is a primary concern," Monroe Federation of Teachers President Sandie Lollie said.

Lollie said the school district has a supply list to protect staff and students.

"To secure locks and doors (and) to put a fence around campus," Lollie said.

Board Member Vickie Krutzer is the main fighter behind the movement. Krutzer and the interim superintendent are looking for extra cash to hire an officer to train teachers on ways they can protect themselves and their students. Board Member Vickie Dayton fully supports the idea.

"You can never assure that nothing will happen, but we need to establish our minimum requirements and we build on that school by school," Dayton said.

Also in the meeting, board members are all smiles after their audit report from some local public accountants. However, school leaders say there is always room for improvement.

"We have a lot of areas to address in order to stay financially stable," Dayton said.

Auditors say there could be some extra improvement internally. The report shows the school system should focus on information and communication, monitoring, risk assessment, and its control environment.
