MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - ULM partnered up with Delta community college along with community volunteers for the 2nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. day of service.
With a flurry of activity, students and volunteers worked together, hauling boxes, bags and tubs filled with donated food and supplies from ULM to The Community Soup kitchen.
Dr. Pamela Higgins-Saulsberry, head of the ULM Social Work Department, helped organize the event. She says the labor of kindness is bringing people of all ages together, working toward one goal: bettering the community. "Well today is all about service and its all about being able to give something back to the community, I believe everything we do for others we do for others we do for ourselves and that is what the Martin Luther King holiday symbolizes," said Dr. Higgins-Saulsberry.
The soup kitchen has served hot meals to the homeless for nearly 20 years and Kitchen director Patricia Johnson says the donations given today will go a long way. "We need everything they that they brought to us today, so that we can continue to give," said Johnson.
Organizers say they want to grow this event for years to come.
