BATON ROUGE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Two of Gov. Bobby Jindal's appointees to the state's top school board are leaving the positions, and the governor has tapped his former chief of staff to fill one of the vacant spots.
Penny Dastugue of Covington and John Bennett of Port Allen announced Friday that they are stepping down from the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Jindal appointed his former chief of staff Stephen Waguespack and Judy Miranti, director of the Division of Education and Graduate Studies at Xavier University, as their replacements.
Dastugue and Bennett had been appointees from Jindal's first term in office, which began in 2008. In a statement, Bennett said he and Dastugue agreed to serve a year into Jindal's second term to provide continuity and stability while new BESE members got their footing.
