Senator Vitter blasts Russian rule to stop U.S. adoptions there

WASHINGTON, D.C., (KNOE 8 News) - Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) today joined more than 70 colleagues in the United States Senate and House of Representatives urging both Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Barack Obama to reverse the law banning adoptions of Russian children by Americans families.
"Putin's ban is simply retaliatory. We need to stand up to this ridiculous order, stand by our support for human rights, and continue processing the adoptions that have already been matched," Vitter said.
On January 1, 2013, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin's ban on the adoptions of Russian children by Americans families and request the continuation of processing for Russian orphans already matched with adoptive American families.
Putin's ban was in response to Congress's decision to hold Russian officials responsible for the illegal imprisonment and murder of Russian attorney Sergei Magnitsky in 2009. The human rights provision was included as part of the Russia Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) bill in December 2012.
