CHATHAM, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The people who live here in Pine Bluffs Estates have problems with what's coming out of their faucets and even what's not. "We've been going through this for years, years!" said Sandra Aston.
Sandra walked over to a bathtub and turned on the water, with water gushing out, she says this is the first time she's seen the water flow like this since Tuesday. She explains that without warning from water company L-W-C management company, faucets ran dry, with water droplets only trickling out every once in a while. "Not enough to take a shower, not enough to run the dish washer, not enough to flush toilets," she said and adds without water, its difficult to take care of her disabled son.
Each time she called L-W-C asking questions, she got the same answer, "they said they were working on it."
LWC declined an on-camera interview, but did tell KNOE 8 News the water issues were weather related and have been taken care of. Still, Sandra is frustrated it took two days to fix the problem. She says the water problems happen at least once a month and always without warning. "They've never called us with any information whatsoever," and adds that even when it does flow, she's fed up with the water quality. According to her, when the water is clear, it smells of chlorine. When it doesn't smell, it's a muddy brown color. "We don't drink the water, ever. Its just nasty."
Sandra feels trapped because LWC is the only company offering water services in the area. "We're stuck its like a monopoly," she said.
For now she will continue filtering and buying her drinking water. In June of 2011, LWC owner Jeff Pruett was sentenced to federal prison for violating 17 conditions of the clean water act.
