Miss. Governor in favor of abortion ban when there's a heartbeat

JACKSON, Miss., (KNOE 8 News) - Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant says he supports a bill that would ban abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

A similar bill was filed last year but died when a Senate committee chairman didn't bring it up for a vote.

The Republican governor spoke Thursday to pastors at a luncheon sponsored by Pro-Life Mississippi. He repeated what he has said many times before, that he wants abortion to end in Mississippi.

Jan. 11th is the deadline for the state's only abortion clinic to come into compliance with a 2012 law that Bryant signed. It would require anyone performing abortions at the clinic to be an OB-GYN with admitting privileges to a local hospital.

The clinic filed a federal lawsuit challenging the law, and was given time to try to comply.
