Dangerous animals lurking through neighborhoods

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Homeowners near the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo are not only on alert for dangerous dogs.

"You see wild dogs; you see raccoons then you see wild dogs running through here," Resident Reggie Robinson said.

Robinson said the animals calling South Monroe home are not a threat to people. The Monroe resident is an eye witness to a string of animal fights.

"There are situations where I've seen raccoons attack other animals," Robinson said. "So, I really can't say what should be done but something but it should be something done."

Monroe Police are working on filling the role of an animal control officer. Police say it's not in the budget for this year, but expect one soon especially with the number of complaints about the wild neighbors.

"The raccoons are a factor for sure," Robinson said. "You know, I see them all the time coming, through the zoo, to the park, from the park, and around the other areas ."

Zoo leaders are mourning the loss of two goats. Workers say the goats were attacked and killed over the weekend. A third goat is recovering from injuries. They believe the culprits behind the crime are several dogs.

"Part of the issue here is responsible pet ownership," Zoo Director Joe Clawson said.

Last year, parish animal officers captured nearly 5,000 stray dogs. Officers say the best thing to do avoid stray dogs is to place a name tag on your pet in case man's best friend goes missing.
