Neville charter group working on BESE application

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A Monroe High School is taking a different route on their mission to become a charter school.

Neville High School's chartership efforts have been both postponed and voted down by the Monroe City School Board. Now the Neville charter board is choosing to bypass the city by applying with the state.

The school is seeking a "Type 2" charter which would separate it from the district. If Neville High School leaves the district, city schools could lose up to 20 million state and federal dollars. With Neville's high ranking test scores pulled out of the mix, the district could even be labeled as failing. "We really don't have a choice the board has made it clear they do not support Neville being a charter school," said Neville alumni president elect Gary Roberts, who adds the group will pursue a charter and see where things lead.

"Its strictly a matter of the proper paperwork being forwarded to the charter group, as far as everything else we're working on that as we speak. Hopefully within the next 60 days we'll have our house in order and hopefully move forward," said Roberts.

The group will submit the charter application by March and hope to open their doors as a charter school by August 2013.
