Roger Swain, former host of The Victory Garden on PBS, will be the featured speaker at the third annual Northeast La. Master Gardeners Seminar Jan. 19, 2013. Roger hosted The Victory Garden from the mid 1980's until 2001.
Biologist, gardener, writer and storyteller, Roger Swain was born and raised outside Boston Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard College, and went on to earn a Ph.D. studying the behavior in ants in tropical rain forests, before becoming Science Editor of Horticulture Magazine. Since 1978, readers have been enjoying Roger's essays and articles in that magazine, as well as his five books: Earthly Pleasures, Field Days, The Practical Gardener, Saving Graces, and Groundwork. When he is not editing Horticulture, filming a TV series, writing, or meeting with gardeners across the country, Roger can be found at work in the orchard and gardens of his New Hampshire farm.
Roger's literary career led to him receiving the American Horticultural Society Award For Writing in 1992, then being awarded the Massachusetts Horticultural Society Gold Medal for his ‘Power To Inspire Others' in 1996.
Roger is always on the go traveling across the country talking to and teaching young gardeners. Chatting with fellow gardeners and those new to gardening is one of Roger's passions. Roger recently co-hosted People, Places, and Plants, a show on HGTV that celebrates New England gardens and gardeners. It features Roger's commentary "Food for Thought".
Common sense, dry wit and experience all rolled into one, Roger offers a wealth of useful and practical information to help you have the most productive garden possible while learning to make choices that work with the surrounding environment. "The skill of gardening was the single greatest skill that humans ever invented," Swain said. "It's an ancient art — 10,000 years old". And it's like sticking your finger in the light socket of life. You're doing something really important."
