At-risk middle school denied charter

Posted: Updated:

NATCHITOCHES, La. (KNOE 8 News & AP) - The Natchitoches Parish School Board has denied an application for a new charter school.

The school was to serve at-risk middle school students. But according to reports the application was deemed inadequate by Kimberly Williams of the Baton Rouge consulting firm New Millennium Education. The board had hired the firm to evaluate the application.

Williams found that the applicant organization had not established federal nonprofit status as the state requires. Also, its articles of incorporation indicated the intent to have a governing board of only three members, while Louisiana law requires a minimum of seven. And only two people who were part of the application hold valid Louisiana teaching certificates; Louisiana charter law requires at least three.
