Shady Grove couple arrested

Posted: Updated:

SHADY GROVE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - A joint investigation by the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office and Natchitoches Parish Coroner's Office has led to the arrest of a Shady Grove couple in connection with a Cruelty to the Infirm abuse case according to Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Victor Jones Jr.

The investigation began December 19th, when the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office received information from a concerned citizen requesting deputies conduct a "welfare check" on a 55 year old disabled man, believed to be living with and cared for by a couple in the Powhattan/or Shady Grove areas.

Deputies say the "welfare concern" centered around the disabled man not being properly cared for, by not being given adequate food, water, medication, possibly being locked in a room, and held for his disability check.

According to supervising deputies, within two hours, the assigned deputies had the residence located at 131 William Sapp Road in the Shady Grove community. While there, deputies obtained permission to search the residence for the disabled man.

Deputies report finding the man in a rear bedroom bed in what deputies described as being some of the worst deplorable conditions, they had ever seen a helpless person in.

Due to obvious medical conditions, deputies requested an ambulance for the weakened man, who reportedly told deputies "please help me, I want to leave this place". "I get one glass of water and one meal a day & no medication".

Natchitoches EMS Paramedics transported the victim to the Natchitoches Regional Medical Center, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for treatment.

On Wednesday evening, December 26th, at approximately 7:00pm, deputies returned to the residence, with criminal warrants, arresting the couple without incident.

Deputies obtained permission to search the residence again, after being told of suspected narcotics in the residence in the presence of two children, ages: 3 and 7.

Deputies seized suspected marijuana, and drug paraphernalia and the children were released to a relative.

As a result of the investigation, deputies arrested Edward Earl Williams, 54 of 131 William Sapp Road, Natchitoches, La., who was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center charged with 1-count of Cruelty to the Infirm, 1-count of Possession of CDS I Marijuana, 1-count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and 1-count of Illegal Possession & Use of a Controlled Dangerous Substance in the Presence of Persons under the age of 17.

Mary Lou Williams, 52 of 131 William Sapp Road, Natchitoches, La., was also arrested and booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center charged with 1-count of Cruelty to the Infirm.

Edward Williams' bond was set at $17,000; Mary Lou Williams' bond was set at $10,000.

The disabled victim has since been released from the Intensive Care Unit and placed in a local facility during his recovery.

Deputies ask that if you know if anyone being abused to contact the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office at 318.352.6432, the NPSO Criminal Investigations Division at 318.357.7830 or online at www.npso@cp-tel.net
