Warhawk bowl luncheon celebrates ULM season

Posted: Updated: Dec 19, 2012 03:35 PM

MONROE, LA. (KNOE 8 News) - At a luncheon on Wednesday, the ULM maroon and gold was in the flowers, the napkins and the hearts of the diners.

From Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo to Ouachita Parish Sheriff Jay Russell to ULM students, the Independence Bowl excitement was in the air.

"In the last two years, the fans really haven't been as involved because they haven't been really doing the best, but this year, they've been doing good," ULM Junior, Addison McDougle, said. "The fans have been coming up a lot more so it's bringing a lot more money to ULM. It looks good."

As the season's highlights were played on giant screens, not just students but older alumni as well gave a standing ovation.

"I've been out here for a lifetime, seems like, and supporting them when they couldn't win," ULM Class of 1960 Alumnus, Glen Williams, said. "They have given this university something we've needed for years."

The drive to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport from Monroe is nearly 100 miles.

But both students and alumni said their love for the Warhawks will get them to that game.

"I'm planning on going, sitting in the student section, get crazy," McDougle said.

"I'm not going to miss a thing over there," echoed Williams. "I'm going on Wednesday."

This celebration of the Warhawks football success was standing room-only.

"This thing sold out in two days," ULM Athletic Director, Bobby Staub, said. "The response was phenomenal. It's a great opportunity to talk about the bowl game because we really haven't been together since the last home game as a group."

With the team leaving for the bowl in less than a week, the Home of the Warhawks is hoping for a big ticket flow from the fans.

"It is very important that they do buy through ULM because, again, a portion of the proceeds actually comes back to the university," Staub said.
