UPDATE: Chemical reaction in El Dorado causes evacuations

Posted: Updated:

EL DORADO, Ark., (KNOE 8 News) - It's all clear in El Dorado after a chemical reaction at the Clean Harbors Comprehensive Services on American Road late Tuesday afternoon led to at least two buildings being evacuated.

The Director of the Union County Emergency Management, Jerry Thomas, says the incident is over with no injuries reported, and people are cleared to return to their homes.

A senior vice-president of Regulatory Affairs says a trailer containing pool chemicals had a reaction.  That caused a large cloud to appear over the plant's transportation yard and move northerly toward the Union County Sheriff's Office and Correctional Facility.

The Union County Sheriff's Department and a nearby convenience store were evacuated.

Clean Harbors personnel helped reroute Highway 63 traffic in the area.

People who live in the area were encouraged to stay indoors, since the chemicals could cause minor eye, nose, and throat irritation.
