Bastrop Fatal Fire

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - An elderly man is dead after a fire broke out at his Bastrop home around 8:30 Wednesday morning.

The Bastrop Fire Department responded to the call on Randall Street, that's where they found 85 year old John Pugh Anderson dead.

Anderson lived alone, and could get around with assistance.

Anderson's granddaughter, Dareasia Lewis says, "if people asked him for stuff he would give and stuff, he's going to be missed I'm going to miss him."

Anderson has lived in this home since 2009, after his other home burned down on his farm in Beakman.

Anderson's granddaughter, Deshonda Rice says, "I was a little shocked I was trying to figure out what was going on, I was just like okay something's not right my mom just told me my granddad's house is on fire."

Rice's instinct was right, Bastrop Fire Chief Eric Montgomery says Anderson died from fire and smoke inhalation.

Montgomery says Anderson had no utilities to his home, and he used a generator to heat the home.

Rice says, "you never know what a person goes through while their here and so he doesn't have anymore worries and he doesn't have to be home anymore."

Anderson's family says he had 24 children and many more grandchildren we spoke with several of them today who are already remembering his life.

Rice says, "he liked trying to fix people's cars even though he had got to an age where he really couldn't do it anymore he still wanted to try."

Anderson's Grandson, Gerald Dean Givens says, "sometimes he would bring my day up he would see if I was sad or something like that he would bring my day up, and he knew how to make you feel better."

Family members say Anderson will be greatly missed.

The cause of the fire is unknown, the investigation is ongoing.
