Salvation Army Angel Tree

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The holiday season will be tough for many families in Northeast Louisiana, some of our children who wouldn't receive anything without help from the Salvation Army and people like you.

New bicycles and bags of presents ready for wrapping and placing under the tree.

Monday the Salvation Army collected toys from the Junior League of Monroe, as part of its Angel Tree Program, but despite truck loads of toys they still needs help!

Salvation Army Lt. Jerry Williams says, "we desperately need more toys, more help because we've got almost 2,000 children that we're serving this year."

Williams says there's a process to make sure people who need help the most get it.

He says, "we do an application process we do a screening process, we do look at experiences versus income we do an extensive application process."

Williams says the goal is to give a child more than one toy, "3 toys and an outfit that would be to us the perfect angel, and that's what we are going to strive to do for each of these children."

He says when you give to the Angel Tree you're not just giving to the children but also their parents.

Williams says, "the Salvation Army doesn't put any name on any of the gifts all the gifts are unwrapped so the parent can wrap them so that way it comes from the parent not the Salvation Army."

He says the red kettle drive also needs more help this year, "we need people to stand at the kettle, the community is giving but they aren't going to give unless there is somebody standing there."

If you're willing to ring a bell, call the Salvation Army to volunteer at a kettle.

If you can afford to adopt an angel, or if you can give just one toy, those can be dropped off at the Salvation Army through Wednesday.

KNOE Sales Staff Members and friends spent the weekend collecting toys for the Salvation Army, and dropped those off Monday.

Some of our on-air staff members, will be out ringing bell for the red kettle drive too.

They'll be at Sam's Club, Saturday afternoon from 2:00-3:00, stop by and say hello!
