Black Engineers Executive Director at Louisiana Tech

Posted: Updated:

RUSTON, La., – Dr. Carl Mack, executive director of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), will speak at Louisiana Tech University on Thursday, December 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the University Hall Auditorium.

Dr. Mack's presentation will focus on the low retention and graduation rates of African Americans majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, courses.  The event is free and open to the public with refreshments served following the presentation.

Louisiana Tech's chapter of NSBE was named the 2011-2012 National Distinguished Chapter of the Year – the highest award any collegiate chapter can receive – for best exemplifying the NSBE mission statement, "to increase the number of culturally responsible, black engineers, who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community."

Before becoming the executive director of NSBE, Dr. Mack worked as an engineer with METRO in Seattle, Washington, and also served as the president of the Seattle King County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).  In 2005, he was named the fourth executive director of NSBE where he has been instrumental in setting record highs for membership and financial resources. He also founded NSBE's Summer Engineering Experience for Kids Academy, a summer program that utilizes NSBE's collegiate engineering members to expose African American children as early as third grade to the world of engineering.

Dr. Mack also serves on the Minority Advisory Board of the Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University, the Board of Trustees of the Society of Automotive Engineers Foundation and the Clarkson University Board of Trustees.
