MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The only run-off race in Monroe is for the district 3 council seat. There are two candidates and one seat, candidates Juanita Woods and Betty Blakes both want it.
"I can move this city forward, I know that I can, I have in the past and I can do it again," said Betty Blakes.
"I think right now the city is primed for someone like me to hop on board to help move the city in the direction its going," said Woods.
District three includes parts of the garden district, louisiville, Desiard and 165 south. Woods is the NOVA workforce institute program director who has gained endorsements from all three of her previous opponents and the mayor of Monroe.
"Within the last 30 days I've gotten tremendous support, I'm so excited about it," said Woods. If elected she says she will work to improve drainage.
Her opponent Blakes is a democrat and boys and girls nonprofit worker. Blakes says she'll focus on crime prevention and economic development.
"I plan to work with the small businesses to find out what they need to move the city forward, to keep them here to sustain them," said Blakes.
Both candidates are Monroe natives who say they have the city's best interest in mind. But only one will be able to serve.
"There is a need and I know I can produce that need," said Blakes.
"This is a very crucial election and we are the only ones on the ballot [for Monroe], So I'm asking you to go out and vote for me Juanita Woods," said Woods.
The winner of the race will take office by the first of the year.
