MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - The Monroe Fire Department is planning to use puppets to connect with the younger generation.

Beginning Monday, December 10th, the department will hold its first official puppet show for students at Carver Elementary School at the Monroe Public Safety Center.

The puppet shows are intended to be an additional for of public education, geared specifically to the area's younger citizens. The Fire Department believes the puppets will serve as a valuable tool in reaching children of preschool and elementary ages. Children are very curious by nature. Many children have a fascination with fire and have been known to hide and play with matches or lighters. Many home fires in our community are caused by matches, lighters, and other heat sources. Children set a lot of these fires.

Members of the fire department believe that early education and prevention plays a key role in a successful fire prevention program. It's believed that firefighter interaction with younger kids with the puppets teach Fire Safety Education by maintaining audience attention and having a lot of fun along the way.

The Puppets were funded by a Fire Prevention Grant through FEMA.
