For the past few years, enthusiastic crowds have turned out to enjoy the Harlem Globetrotters at our Civic Center Arena. However, that was only one game per year. Several years ago, the Monroe Civic Center was known for hosting various high school tournaments and college basketball games--it was a great component of our local quality of life. The city, parish, and region all have a rich history and tradition for exciting championship quality high school and college basketball. That great family tradition is something the city's Community Affairs department wants to restore.
In addition to the civic center arena, earlier this year, Mayor Mayo and our City Council approved funding for the installation of new basketball floors in three of Monroe's city community centers. The arena floor should be done within a few days, and those other Parks & Recreation division projects should be completed during the first half of 2013. The Monroe-West Monroe Convention & Visitors Bureau has been highly successful with opportunities for various state, regional and national summer and post-season basketball tournaments at the junior high and high school level. These new floors will provide additional venues for local games; and, they will enhance the likelihood for us to be selected as a host city or region for future events. This is great for our local quality of life, tourism, and revenue!
