GRAMBLING, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Louisiana's budding high school poets have a chance to show off their best work and win $100 to $500 in a poetry contest hosted by the Department of English and Foreign Languages at Grambling State University. "Poetry can awaken the soul, and universities should facilitate that awakening," said Hugh Wilson, an English professor and co-coordinator of the contest. "We know there are some wonderful poets in high schools across the state, and we want to recognize them, recruit them and encourage them."

State high school juniors and seniors are invited to participate by submitting original poems to poetry@gram.edu. Each email submission must include the student's name, class (junior, senior), street address, city, state, zip code, e-mail address, phone number, and name of high school, including city/town and parish. In addition, each submission must include the name(s) of any teacher(s) who may have encouraged the student to write or submit an entry. Each contestant will retain primary copyright; however, by entering the contest each contestant agrees to allow the university department to publicize and publish submitted poems without charge.

University faculty members will judge all entries anonymously. Judges' decisions will be final. Contest coordinators have the right to withhold prizes if insufficient submissions of reasonable quality are received. The contest is supported by voluntary department faculty donations. Under no circumstances will a contestant have any claims against Grambling State, the Department of English or judges. Grambling State University disclaims any responsibility for matters of judgment. The winning entries may in these categories with these prize amounts:

-- $500, best original poem in English
-- $300, second place original poem in English
-- $100, third place original poem in English

In addition, one student will win $100 for the best original poem in Spanish and another student will win $100 for the best original poem in French. Prizewinners will be sent checks or money orders. Submissions will be accepted until January 31, 2013. Winners will be notified by April 15, 2013. For more information, email poetry@gram.edu.
