MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Firey exchanges at the Monroe City School Board meeting Tuesday night, has left a sour taste in the mouths of many parents.
Parents are telling KNOE, it's just another distraction, focusing efforts somewhere other than on the children. The antics of some of the board members on Tuesday night has parent Andy Trahan worried, who says those in charge of taking care of the children are acting like children themselves.
"It cant' look good given the fact that they are looking for a superintendent and given the history of the two prior superintendents that I know of, you put it all together and its just an ugly situation," said Trahan who lives in district 2.
Trahan is talking about the heated exchanges that began after board president Verbon Muhammad read a complaint from employee Davona Howard. It said a conversation was accidentally recorded on Howard's voicemail between board member Vickie Krutzer and an unnamed man.
In the message the man, not Vickie Krutzer, tossed around a racial slur apparently directed toward black members of the superintendent search committee and their IQ's, the message also criticized Rodney Mcfarland's leadership of that committee.
As a result, Muhammad removed her as finance chair and even threatened her saying, "If she's not going to resign, we'll do our best to isolate her from district 2," said Muhammad. But Trahan says that action is a bigger deal than a school board squabble and hurts Krutzers district.
"That certainly doesn't seem to be the right thing to do, I'm in district 2 and I have nothing to do with this, I don't think I should suffer. I think by isolating her and essentially taking her voice, takes away her representation and takes away my voice," said Trahan.
We spoke with several other district 2 parents off camera, who shared similar concerns and say they are tired of all the board drama and want their elected leaders to focus on the children.
We asked Krutzer if she would take legal action. She referred us to her attorney, who has not returned our call.
