LDCC Chancellor candidates face community's questions

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, LA. (KNOE 8 News) - The three Louisiana Delta Community College Chancellor hopefuls faced a gauntlet of questions at a public forum at the college on Wednesday.

Questions from local business leaders....

"I want to know that you won't relax your rules," said one leader.

Faculty members....

"We are completely out of toner in our classrooms. We're unable to help students print their resumes," one member said.

And even students from all over Northeast Louisiana.

The college hosted three different 45 minute public forums for each candidate as they made their cases before the crowds.

Dr. Barbara Hanson, Vice President of Learning at San Jacinto College-Central Campus in Pasadena, Texas, outlined her vision for education.

"We have a moral responsibility to do the best that we can possibly do as educators, as administrators, as staff, to help provide educational opportunities to the people that we are privileged to serve," Hanson said.

Dr. Rodney Ellis, Executive Vice President of Atlanta Technical College in Atlanta, Georgia, pointed to his experience.

"Academic affairs, student affairs, fundraising, economic development, finance and accounting. I've had experience in each of those areas. That experience totals over 20 years," Ellis said.

Interim LDCC Chancellor, Dr. Jerry Ryan, referenced his current involvement with the college.

"The chancellor's expected to serve. I serve on eight boards already, having just been here six months and that's a natural kind of part of what the chancellor does," Ryan said.

Everyone in attendance received a candidate comment form to fill out.

The people's feedback and that of the LDCC search committee's will go straight to the president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, Dr. Joe May.

"On December 12th, he will then make his final recommendation to the (LCTCS) board of supervisors," LDCC Director of Public Relations, Darian Atkins, said.

That final recommendation in Baton Rouge could give LDCC its next chancellor.

KNOE 8 News was told the identity of the last finalist won't be revealed until December 12th.
