OAK GROVE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Overnight, Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 2 west of Louisiana Highway 587.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Nissan Xterra, driven by 36-year-old Lewis Wells of Oak Grove, was traveling west on Louisiana Highway 2 when it traveled off the road to the right, struck a driveway then traveled over a fence before striking a tree.
Wells was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Wells was pronounced dead at the scene by the West Carroll Parish Coroner's Office.
Impairment is suspected. A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
The majority of fatal and serious injury crashes involve occupants who are not wearing seatbelts and/or impaired drivers. State Law requires seatbelts to be used at every seating position in the vehicle. Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of being properly restrained at all times and that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Motorists should never get behind the wheel if they are impaired and should either stay where they are or call someone who is sober to pick them up.
Troop F has investigated 28 fatal crashes which have resulted in 31 deaths so far this year.
