MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The city of Monroe's held its annual tree lighting ceremony Saturday evening. Dozens watched this evening as the city's tree sparked to life.  Holiday music was sung by local students and free cookies and drinks were served.

Mayor Jamie Mayo says its the 12th year he's turned on the lights. "Well it's always a fun time of the year and this is the official opening of the holiday season in the City of Monroe," the mayor said. "So we have parents here, children here, we had ULM here and city officials as well as employees, its just an opportunity to have a good time," he added.

To top it all off, Santa rode through on a Monroe fire engine with candy for the kids.
