IP mill is demolished in Bastrop

BASTROP, La. (KNOE 8 News) - One of the last structures of the former International Paper mill was demolished Saturday morning.

Former paper mill employees, along with curious onlookers, stood just behind the 1,000 foot safety line to watch the implosion of what was once the IP boiler.

Donzia Releford worked for IP for a little over 36 years and standing outside the facility reminds her of what it was like 4 years ago to hear the mill was shutting down operations.

"It was kind of sad, everybody, I mean you hate to lose your job," says Releford.

Fortunately she and a few others were able to keep a job with the company for a few more years, distributing products left over after the shutdown.

After decades with International Paper, Releford is still working on the property, but in a much different role.

"Today, I'm working for Frontier, helping them tear down and then we ship it out," says Releford.

Frontier Industrial Corporation is in charge of the demolition of the mill.

"Everything went as planned," says Hector Suarez, Special Projects Manager with Frontier, "The building came down in a controlled manner, and everyone was safe."

Although helping clean up what used to be her job site is difficult, Releford is still counting her blessings.

"I'm grateful to still have a job," she says.

Her job with Frontier is scheduled to end along with the demolition project next year. Releford says she will once again, be left searching for another job.
