Doyline families pack up for evacuation

Posted: Updated:

DOYLINE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Many living near Camp Minden in Doyline are hitting the road Friday evening as part of an optional evacuation.

After a community-wide discussion of the danger of the explosives at Camp Minden, many people in Doyline decided that an evacuation was the safest option.

Tammy Guice was one of them, and spent the afternoon loading up her van.

"We've got the clothes packed up and we've got the animals in the backyard that we've got to pack," says Guice.

Guice and her three children plan to stay with family in Benton during the evacuation. She refuses to put her children in any danger, especially after the explosion last month.

"It was like a scary movie where the glass...protruded, you know, it just went in and then back out. It scared us," Guice says.

Jane Sutton is also evacuating. She lives alone after her husband died earlier this year, and would rather spend this uneasy time with close family.

"If they advise us to be out, I think it's the safest thing to do to be out. Even though they're not making it mandatory, if that's what they feel is safer then that's what I need to do," says Sutton.

Others in Doyline disagree. Kathryn Matthews works at Tina's Kitchen, and says they'll be open all weekend. After living here for more than 20 years, she doesn't think any of this is necessary.

"You're living here by an ammunition plant, you can expect things to be here, you can expect things to happen from time to time. To me, it's just not a big deal," says Matthews.

Not a big deal to some, but other's are taking extra precautions to protect their families.

"With the kids, not necessarily ourselves, but it's not a chance your willing to take," says Guice.

While Tammy Guice and her kids feel it's a lot of effort to pack up and move out for the weekend, they say heading out is the safest option.
