WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The mother of a West Monroe High School student hospitalized after a fight on a school bus speaks out about her son's abuse.
West Monroe Police and the school bus driver called Ginilynne Hilt saying that her son was being transported to the hospital Tuesday, November 27, just minutes after he got on the bus to go to school.
Less than a mile from Hilt's home, police say her son was beaten on his bus by two other students.
"Since Kindergarten, he's been bullied at every school he's been at," says Hilt. "He's even been bullied at one school by a teacher."
Hilt says her son is targeted by bullies because he's a special needs student. He was born almost four months premature and suffers from physical and mental development issues.
Hilt describes what she saw in the bus surveillance video, "he sat there and he took it, and then his hand hit them, they came on to them and it was a bloody massacre."
She says the worst part about the incident - aside from her son's pain - is that he thinks this treatment will never stop.
"It's okay, I just have to live with it and take it because nothing is going to be done about it," Hilt says quoting her son.
Hilt wants to prove to her son that things will change. She is waiting on a peace bond to be approved against the two boys that injured her son, to make sure he is safe at school and on the bus. Hilt also has a message for parents, who's children may be suffering the same abuse.
"I want every parent to ask their kid, everyday, throughout the day, is there anything happening to you," says Hilt.
According to Hilt, West Monroe High School plans to recommend the two students for expulsion. If so, the students will appear in front of a Ouachita Parish School Board committee for an expulsion hearing.
