MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - With a snip of a ribbon, Monroe Regional Airports new baggage claim building officially opened Thursday afternoon.

The Selman Field Memorial wall was dedicated as part of the event with a flag raising ceremony, marking phase two of the airport project as fully functional.

Airport director Ron Phillips says he is relieved the second phase is completed, but isn't taking all of the credit. "Well it feels good, one thing about it is we have some good people working for us, our staff, couldn't have done it without them plus the previous administration we couldn't have gotten to that point without them," Phillips said.

City and state leaders were invited, along with the public, to view the additions. New to the airport are two new baggage conveyor belts, four new car rental offices, an interfaith chapel, an unclaimed baggage office, and a passenger information center.

As for the Selman Field Memorial wall, it may look familiar, that's because its walls were a part of the old terminal. Looking forward Phillips says now that the inside work is done he wants to beautify the outside landscape.  "We want to put in new lighting and redo the median that's coming in so we want to really enhance the entrance," said Phillips.

Phillips says plans for a 2.1 million dollar fire station next to the terminal is also in the works. The price tag for both phases of the new airport terminal is more than 35-million dollars.
