A school voucher ruling may come down this week

BATON ROUGE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - The battle over Governor Jindal's statewide voucher program continued in a Baton Rouge court today.

The arguments center around whether the governor's statewide voucher program is constitutional or unconstitutional as the trial moves into its second day.

Judge Tim Kelley said he expects to rule this week on the lawsuit from teacher unions and school boards seeking to shut down the vouchers and to stop other planned education changes that would funnel more money away from traditional public schools.

Lawyers for the unions and school boards say it's illegal to pay for vouchers to private schools through the public school funding formula. They also claim lawmakers didn't follow the proper process.

Lawyers for the state education department and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education say the programs were funded and created in line with the constitution and state law.
