FARMERVILLE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A teacher at Downsville Charter School in Union Parish is behind bars Tuesday night.
"oh, it's unbelievable. I grew up in this community. I went to 8th grade at that school," Former student Brad Toft said.
Toft is a former student, before the school became a charter. He and other neighbors are shocked to learn. 41-year-old Bridgette Gean is in jail facing four counts of molestation. Deputies say the teacher had sex with a 16-year-old boy, 11 months ago. At that time, the school was directly under the parish system.
"If in fact the charges are true, I think what you have is a betrayal," Superintendent George Cannon said.
Dr. Cannon calls it the ultimate sin a teacher can commit. Off camera, several students say they were told the teacher was taking a sick day. Toft says the moment is now for parents to speak with their kids.
"Explain to them if anything like that were to happen, what to do and who to talk to," Toft said.
Deputies say the 41-year-old coughed up a $1,500 bond after being taken to jail over the weekend on a domestic violence charge. The sheriff's office says Gean's husband made an attempt to take their children away since, according to him, the teacher has a drinking problem. And now, the educator has another battle to fight. No word on a bond amount for this new charge.
"There's absolutely nothing that I could ever think of that's happened like this in this community," Toft said.
As of now, the teacher remains employed at the school.
