WEST CARROLL PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A West Carroll community is mourning the loss of a pilot who died doing something he loved. He crashed his experimental aircraft on his own property Monday morning. This son of a former sheriff is remembered Tuesday night for more than his desire to take flight.
The small community of Concord in West Carroll parish is mourning the loss of a well respected community member. Randy Capers, a pilot of thirty years, died in a crash while flying a plane he built. The accident happened on the Capers family property, 11 miles northwest of Oak Grove. Pictures of the small single engine experimental plane show a heavily damaged aircraft. Because the crash was deadly, the FAA has turned the case over to the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate.
Capers is the son of a former sheriff, who served during the 1960's. While the Capers family isn't talking about the accident Tuesday night, we're learning from those who knew him. That he was well loved by his community. "He was just a good fella and everybody respected randy for that, " said Howard.
Mike Howard is a family friend and community pastor. He says the 68 year old will be missed. "There is probably nobody in this community that didn't highly respect Randy Capers, " said Howard.
Howard describes the retired farmer, as an outdoors man who loved riding horses. The pastor says Capers also enjoyed playing guitar and going to church. But most of all, he loved his family. "He'll be missed as a friend and just as a good person, just a lot of people looked up to him, " said Howard.
Capers leaves behind his wife and three kids. It could take several months to a year for the NTSB to determine the cause of the crash.
