Hostess shuts down operations

Posted: Updated:

IRVING, Tx. (KNOE 8 News) - At the end of business hours Friday, the doors at Hostess Brands Inc. will close for good.

Hostess Brands Inc. has announced that it is shutting down operations. The company has filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for permission to close. According to the Hostess web site, bakery operations have been suspended at all plants, but delivery and sales of products will continue in order to sell already-baked products.

The shutdown comes after a crippling strike by one of the company's biggest unions, the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM).

On November 14, Hostess Brands Inc. announced that it would liquidate if normal operations could not be restored the next day. The company determined Thursday that an insufficient number of employees returned to work, and that operations could not be restored.

According the brand, over 18,000 employees will be laid-off promptly and the company will sell its assets to the highest bidder.

Hostess Brands Inc. includes popular products like Twinkies®, Ding Dongs®, and Ho Ho's®, as well as Wonderbread products and Nature's Pride®.
