Monroe's annual shoe drive is underway

MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Monroe Beautiful Executive Director Greg Smith has officially announced the launch of the Monroe Proud Pair Share Shoe Drive.

The drive runs through November 30.

The shoe recycling project is a collaboration of Keep Monroe Beautiful, Keep Ouachita Parish Beautiful, Monroe City Schools, Ouachita Parish Schools, Louisiana Delta Community College, United Way 211, Home Depot and the City of Monroe. The campaign is centered around the November 15th America Recycles Day and is geared toward redistribution of new and gently used shoes to the less fortunate in Northeast Louisiana.

Smith says, "This is an excellent opportunity for area residents of all ages to see how easy it is to recycle and at the same time give a helping hand to our global village. The campaign gets the shoes out of closets, where they aren't being used, and keeps them out of landfills where they would just take up space. The ultimate goal is to get them on the feet of someone who really needs them."

The goal is to collect at least three thousand pairs of shoes parish-wide. Area residents will be able to donate new or gently worn shoes during the campaign. That will match the number of shoes collected in the inaugural "Pair Share" campaign conducted in 2011, in conjunction with Keep Louisiana Beautiful and Soles4Souls. That campaign collected nearly 20 thousand pair statewide, with the shoes being distributed internationally.

Shoes should be tied by the laces or bound together with rubber bands to prevent loss and the need for later sorting issues. United Way 211 will assist with the distribution of the shoes to area charities, while Home Depot is donating boxes for storage.

Churches, service organizations and civic groups are encouraged to take part by conducting their own drives and contributing to the Monroe Proud Pair Share Campaign.
