Streets of Monroe-West Monroe

Posted: Updated:

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Like many cities across the country, West Monroe has a Mane street, but we spell it differently form those other places.  The street names in your city or town are really a reflection of the area  and the people who lived there in the past.

Ron Downing:  "Drago Street here was named for Antoine Drago, who was my great-great-great grandfather.  This is part of Drago Plantation."

The street names we see today sometimes bear the last name of a founding family or an individual...take for example, the street called Su-Quak-Natch-Ah.

Downing:  "Miss Olivia Pickens had a home there, as they began to pick out names for the streets, she had a housekeeper, who was part black and part Indian, her name was Su-Quak-Natch-Ah."

Ron Downing is a West Monroe Florist and historian with an encylopedic knowledge of the streets of that town.

"We have Crosley Street off of Cypress...it runs by the old home place for J P Crosley.  JP had two grand daughters Stella and Clayton...they have streets named for them."

The street names in West Monroe reflect Louisiana's flora and fauna, the terrain and, of course, the rivers and bayous.
