Sewage rates may rise in Monroe

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Home and business owners in the City of Monroe may be spending more on their sewage bill. Tuesday night, the Monroe City Council says the price tag on treating sewage is rising and now they need help footing the bill. City leaders have not increased the rates in more than ten years. Previously, the council has been using the surplus money to pay for the extra cost. Council Chair Jay Marx says raising rates is something that has to be done.

"It's going to hit some people harder. 55% sounds like an awful lot. Well, I think it ended up at 4,000 gallons that 55% was $5 a month," Marx said.

If the proposal is passed, the raised rates will go into effect immediately. Residents and business owners can weigh in on this subject at the next city council meeting in two weeks.
