First Monroe America Recycles event set

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - The City has announced that the first annual America Recycles Day event will be held at the Monroe Public Safety Center on Saturday, November 17th.

Keep Monroe Beautiful and Keep Ouachita Parish Beautiful are combining resources for the event to be held from 9am until 1 pm, Saturday, November 17 at Monroe's Public Safety Center, located at 1810 Martin Luther King Drive (U.S. 165 South).

Greg Smith, Executive Director of Keep Monroe Beautiful, says, "This is an opportunity for our entire parish to get involved in recycling. This GO GREEN effort is a good time for people to get rid of those tires sitting around the house as well as outdated electronics collecting dust. We would much rather have people bring them to us instead of creating an eyesore by placing them at roadside."

The public will be able to recycle tires and electronics as well as paper, plastics and scrap metal.

Tires are limited to 5 per household and only those up to 20 inches in dimension will be accepted. Large quantities from businesses, farms or commercial operations will not be accepted.

Best Buy and Capital Area Corporate Recycling will assist with the recycling of electronics such as TV's, computers, monitors and game consoles.

No hazardous materials will be accepted at this recycling event. An event will be conducted in the spring to collect those materials as well as tires and electronics.

The National America Recycles Day is November 15, 2012; and, is geared toward the creation of events that encourage people to REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE!
