Effort to fund animal shelter fails

Posted: Updated:

UNION PARISH (KNOE 8 News) - A new millage tax that would have benefited the Union Parish Humane Society failed.

The ballot item would have created a new tax for the police jury.  All of the proceeds were to be donated to the Union Humane Society to fund management and operation of a new animal shelter in Farmerville.   The vote came down to a one-percent difference causing the measure to fail.   The group setting up the shelter had the land and donations to build, but needed the tax money to manage the facility.   Without that money the shelter cannot be built.  The tax would have created the only animal shelter in Union Parish.
