MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Election day draws closer and it's got one councilman remember almost a decade of time served on the Monroe City Council.
Jay Marx has represented District 1 on the City Council for more than 8 years, and he calls his time on the board "great."
"For the most part we all felt like we had two different jobs, one was to serve our constituents, but just as important was to serve the best interest of the city of Monroe," says Marx.
He is proud of the accomplishments of the council during his time on it, and can only hope for the best with the new council.
Only three districts face opposition and only one of those has a candidate up for re-election. In District 2, three people are running. District 3 has five newcomers on the ballot, and District 4 has four vying for a spot on the council.
At a recent candidate forum, education and getting more money in specific districts, were brought up as areas of concern. This concerns Marx because education and the redistribution by district of the budget, doesn't fall under the responsibility of the council. He says newly elected members, might have a lot to learn.
"As citizens, we think we know everything, you really have to be there, you have to be involved to understand," says Marx.
Marx wishes the council the best, but gives one bit of advice.
"I guess I can sum it up and say it's not about you, it's about us and that is how you have a good government," Marx says.
