EAST CAROLL, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Former East Carroll jail employees are filing a federal suit against former sheriff Mark Shumate.

The former employees say they were fired because they supported Summate's opponent in the sheriff election in October of last year. They say Shumate retaliated against their freedom of speech and violated their constitutional rights.

Attorney Charles Kincade says the former employees suffered damages in lost wages, lost benefits, and lost career opportunities. "They take very seriously the freedom to support the candidate of their choice, they take that very seriously as all Americans should especially in this political season" said Kincade. "So they just said they were not going to take it, they felt like they were retaliated against and their rights were violated and seek redress. And in our country you seek redress in our courts" adds Kincade.

According to court documents, Shumate denies all allegations.
