Operation Stand Down

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - In Northeast Louisiana there are over 250 people on the streets, sleeping in the backseat of a car, or in a park, over half of those are a parent or family with children under 18 with them on the streets.

Karen Fudge was one of them, but because of a program like Operation Stand Down she's starting to get back on her feet.

Fudge says, "girl about six months ago I wouldn't be looking like this but I feel good about myself I'm blessed, and I thank the lord."

She says she is able to get all of her medical, eye, and dental care here, along with over a hundred other people.

She says it's programs like this, that gives them hope because it shows people care.

Fudge says, "I learned how to care about me, a lot of people especially family and friends when they see you down they don't help you as much, but it's these people that will help you, they care."

She says she never knew she had diabetes until an event like this.

Fudge says, "I mean I just didn't know how bad my health was until I got here and a lot of these people that are helping me, I'm feeling good about myself because I thought I was going to be dead, so now I'm feeling really good about myself."

She says a lot of people have a misunderstanding of what it means to be homeless, "a lot of people feel because you're homeless you don't have the clothes, you don't have the food, you don't have the look, you don't have the sense of mind, it's not all about that it's what's inside you're heart."

Fudge says she would tell anyone going through what she is, there is hope.

She says, "it's a lot of people that will help you, if you want to be helped, if you don't want to be helped you can't help yourself, how are other people suppose to help you too."

If you run across anyone who needs help, or if you need help, you can call the Wellspring Crisis Hotline at 318-323-1505.
