WEST MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - The West Monroe-West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has decided to endorse two issues on the on the Nov. 6th election.
The Board is endorsing, in the individual parishes, the right of voters to decide for their own particular school district whether they want school board members to have term limits. If approved by voters, term limits would be enacted for School Board members for three consecutive terms – a maximum of 12 years. The current term would not be included in the three-term limit and would begin with the next School Board election. If approved, the term limits would align local school board members with the term limits of BESE and the Louisiana Legislature.
Amendment No. 8 is the Competitive Projects Tax Exemption Program. The Property Tax Exemption for Competitive Projects would enable Louisiana Economic Development or local governmental entities to extend a 10-year property tax exemption to highly competitive projects in targeted sectors. Specifically, the first $10 million or 10 percent of fair market value, whichever is greater, would not be exempted.
If approved, this new incentive would only be offered in parishes where all of the following local governmental entities agree to participate – parish governing authority, all municipalities and school boards that levy property taxes, the parish tax enforcement district and the assessor.
There are a total of nine Constitutional Amendments on the November 6 ballot. A complete list of Louisiana Constitutional Amendments can be found online at the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana at www.parlouisiana.org.
