Hotel guests blame bites on bed bugs

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Three guests are finding it tough sleeping at one hotel in Ouachita Parish.

Cell phone video, according to three women, is footage of bed bugs inside of their room.

"I expect this kind of amenities, if you want to call it, from a motel, not a hotel," Lisa Kennedy said.

Lisa Kennedy and her other co-workers are in the parish for a week of work. They say the job isn't challenging, it's actually hard getting a good night's rest.

"I'm all welt up, on my chest, everything, all my arms, so I hade to get up and go to the emergency room," Kennedy said.

A medical discharge paper shows bed bugs as the reason behind the bumps and bruises.

"I had red marks all over me and I started itching really bad," Juanita Fontenot said.

Managers with the hotel in question say they're fully investigating this issue. We are not naming the business for that purpose but the women say their cell phone footage speaks for itself.

Bed bugs are reddish-brown wingless insects that feed on the blood of humans. The Louisiana Bed Bug Task Force says they're typically found in motels and hotels. The group said getting the critters out, carries a hefty price tag on the business.

"I stripped the bed down, dead bugs in the bed, on the rail and they're still in the room," Shayvay Smith said.

The task force says the bugs are typically brought inside a business by traveling in a person's luggage, pillows, or even blankets.

The Environmental Protection Agency considers bed bugs a public health pest, but unlike many others, these little insects don't carry any known diseases.
