MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Halloween is creeping up, and there are tips you should keep in mind before you let your children trick-or-treat.

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff Jay Russell says first do not drop your child off, always stay with them.

He says be sure your child has something reflective on their costume.Sheriff Russell says they are encouraging drivers to take extra precaution and be aware of children who may be trick-or-treating.

Drivers should turn their car lights on earlier than normal.

Russell says there is a link on their website to check for sex offenders in the neighborhoods you're child will be trick-or-treating.

Sheriff Russell says, "you put in your address or the neighborhood in which you'll be trick-or-treating, it'll show you every sex offender and address, and a picture of that sex offender so it's a very useful tool for a parent to use to protect your child."
