Jonesboro citizens file suit

Posted: Updated:

Jonesboro, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Some of Jonesboro's citizens say that their rights as voters are being infringed on by the state.

The residents filing the suit believe the appointment of a Fiscal Administrator by the state has stripped Mayor Leslie Thompson of his power. After the Attorney General's office determined the state was in a "financial crisis," an employee was appointed to oversee financial duties in Jonesboro, and to provide a recommendation at the end of his term.

According the Mayor Thompson, aLmost two weeks ago, the fiscal administrator unexpectedly resigned and did not leave a recommendation.

The town paid the FA over $60,000 - roughly $1000 a day - for his time served.

The citizens believe their tax money has been misspent by paying the FA's salary.

According to the Mayor's Administrative Assistant David Dill, during this term, money had to be taken out of other funds in the town's budget to pay for the Fiscal administrator.

"It took away my rights as a mayor, those rights that you voted and installed in me," says Mayor Leslie Thompson, "Take away whether you like me or not, look at the right and wrong."

The Jackson Parish branch of the NAACP stated that this installment was an infringement upon the rights of voters who elected Mayor Thompson,

"If all us stand together, we can change things," says Wendy  Callahan of the NAACP, "We will not stand to have any group challenge or vote."
