MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - In Monroe three candidates are competing for the district 2 city council seat. The faces of Monroe's district two city council race may look familiar because all three candidates have run for a city office before.
The district that stretches from north Monroe to ULM and includes much of the "mid city" around 19th street, is the only council race with an incumbent in the running. Republican Gretchen Ezernack, a fourth generation Monroe resident and real estate director was first elected in 2010 in a special election after her predecessor Ben Katz passed away.
"I've been on the council almost three years at this point and experience is invaluable being able to hit the ground running" said Gretchen Ezernack. The council woman says during her tenure, district 2 has seen improvements in drainage, transportation, and economic development. "The successes we've had in those areas have been enhanced by my ability in real estate" said Ezernack. If re-elected Ezernack says she'll make infrastructure improvements on several district 2 projects.
Also in the race, no party comic book store owner Clint Thomas and he's no stranger to the Monroe City ballot, a perennial mayoral candidate, he has run for mayor and lost in every race since 2000. "I decided to run for city council because I found out how cool of a job it was when I ran for mayor last time" said Thomas. As a self proclaimed "people's candidate", he says if elected, he will stick up for the people of Monroe. "I'm tired of politicians who sell out the people for anybody who will put a dollar in their pocket."
Another contender, Democrat Holly White Dixon, who ran for the same position two years ago and lost against Ezernack. Dixon is a business owner and a Monroe resident for over 10 years. Candidate Holly Dixon was unable to speak with us as of news time.
