OAK GROVE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - West Carroll Sheriff Jerry Philley confirms two inmates are on the run.
The sheriff said he believes the prisoners broke out of jail around 3 Saturday morning. Philley said the detention center didn't discover they were missing until 9 a.m. and the sheriff's office didn't get a notice about the inmates missing until around 11 a.m. Saturday.
"They should have notified me, as soon as they realized that person was gone," Philley said.
Philley confirms Steven McCarthy,27, and Henry Curtis, 31, who also goes by Joseph Henry, managed to escape by breaking a lock on a door, cutting an opening on a fence, and then running away.
Philley believes the two had help from the outside cutting the fence to help them escape.
Both men are serving a 12 year sentence. McCarthy was booked on burglary and simple escape convictions. The sheriff said he also escaped from two other facilities. Curtis was booked after 2 convictions on burglary and theft.
According to Philley, the detention center mostly has prisoners from South Louisiana. The two escapees are from the New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas. The sheriff believes the pair are not located in our area anymore and that they must expand the search.
Philley said events like this are why he believes the facility should be run by law enforcement.
"We're working with the department of corrections to try and help that situation as best we can," he said.
The West Carroll Detention Center is operated through Emerald Companies.
