WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The annual heart walk in Monroe is Saturday, and each year a heart walk chair leads the festivities, and this year, it's Dr. Terry King of West Monroe.
When Dr. Terry King grabs the microphone as the chairman of the annual heart walk in Monroe, he'll have a unique connection to the event, that no other prior chairman can claim.
Dr. King says, "this is all done, with the hopes of enlightening people as to the importance of the American heart."
Dr. King has always been passionate about helping patients dealing with heart disease and those with holes in their hearts.
Dr. King says, "in the late 60s heart surgery was excellent with excellent results, but I often thought why can't we fix holes in the heart, but when I would ask my colleagues and surgeons about this the answer was no."
King says after being told over and over again that it couldn't be done, he set out to find a way to make it work, and he did.
Dr. King, "in the mid-70s we begin to close hearts with catheters, in human beings, the first time it had ever been done in the world."
Since then King's invention has sparked over fifty different types of devices, and is the first line of defense for repairing your heart today.
King says people give money to organizations, and think it doesn't make a difference.
He says, "let me assure you the money you give to organizations like the American Heart or united way come home to bring wonderful things happening the recipients and even though we may not know who they are, God knows."
The heart walk is tomorrow morning at Forsythe Park, beginning at 8:00 A.M.
