MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - October is national school bus safety month and all week Monroe school children are getting lessons from their own bus drivers.

With the help of a bus replica made out of wood, Jefferson Elementary kids were taught bus safety Wednesday morning. The workshop also emphasized bully prevention. The kids were sent home with prizes and a safety and bully prevention book.

Bus driver James Mcneal says bullying on school buses is a real problem. "I hope they learn that bullying is not a good thing to do because people get hurt when you bully somebody and that's not good. You need to tell someone when you are being bullied, tell your teacher tell your momma, tell the principal tell someone, tell someone when you are being bullied by someone" said McNeal.

"The bus drivers can't see everything and there are not a lot of monitors on the busses and kids get to playing and passing licks and you can't see it because once you look up in that mirror, you look up in that mirror for a split second and may run into the back of somebody." added McNeal.

The children of Cypress Point Elementary will learn about bus safety Thursday morning.
