Car batteries stolen by the dozen in Union Parish

Posted: Updated:

DOWNSVILLE, LA. (KNOE 8 News) - Late at night on October 10th, dozens of car batteries were unbolted or cut free from their vehicles sitting in an auto repair shop lot.

By the morning of the 11th, the owners of Patton Automotive in Downsville saw the damage the burglars had done.

The Union Parish Sheriff's Office said what concerns them is that these car battery thefts usually only happen once or twice every now and then, but it was affecting dozens of vehicles this time.

Between 18 and 20 batteries were stolen, costing Patton $1,200 to reimburse their customers.

When KNOE 8 News asked the sheriff's office if the thieves were trying to sell the batteries for scrap, they told us this:

"That is a consideration....the value of these batteries has increased. For scrap yards....battery recycling places, the word's been put out. We need for these folks to be looking as well."

Officers said this large of a theft is different and believe the auto repair shop was targeted.

They've notified nearby scrap yards to report anything suspicious and now they're putting the call out to the people, trying to catch these thieves before they find more targets.

Anyone with any possible leads is urged to call the Crimestoppers of Union Parish.

That number is 318-368-9679.
