Pharmacy Burglaries on the Rise

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Monroe Police Department says the number of pharmacy burglaries is on the rise, in the past few weeks, three pharmacies have been hit.

Those are in addition to several other burglaries at different pharmacies earlier in the year.

With pharmacy burglaries on the rise police are turning up their investigation, the most recent attempt was at the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Monroe.

Monroe Police Department Sgt. Craig Honeycutt says, "suspects broke into the business attempted to get to the narcotics I think they were unsuccessful in that they did cause a lot of damage."

Honeycutt says some businesses like The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy have been lucky.

He says, "some of them have been attempted burglaries where they actually make entry but their not able to actually get to the narcotics."

Other local pharmacies haven't been as fortunate Sergeant Honeycutt says the smaller, mom and pop type, pharmacies are the ones being targeted.

If pills are taken it's usually Xanax or Lortabs, and it's all for a reason.

Honeycutt says, "if you were able to buy just one pill at a pharmacy you might pay less than a dollar for them, but if you take one out of the pharmacy and go out to the street and sell it you might double, triple, quadruple the prices."

Now police are wondering if the string of burglaries could be connected, "there is a reason to believe they may be connected, but we don't have enough evidence to prove that."

Sergeant Honeycutt says they have beefed up police patrol around the pharmacies, "they are following up on leads here and there but nothing has been successful yet or panned out but we are doing everything we can to prevent more of these from happening."

Honeycutt says their investigation is still on going.

If you have any information about any of the pharmacy break ins you're asked to contact the Ouachita Parish Crime Stoppers at 388-CASH.
